What Does 1% Asbestos Mean in Ontario?

A material that contains less than 1% asbestos is considered to contain trace levels of asbestos. However, the 1% level is not a risk-based limit, and the concentration of asbestos in a material does not necessarily correlate to air exposure.

Here are some things to consider about asbestos:
  • Asbestos-containing materials (ACM)
In Ontario, ACM is defined as material that contains 0.5% or more asbestos by dry weight.

  • Health effects
No amount of asbestos is considered safe, and the more asbestos you are exposed to, the more likely you are to get an asbestos disease.

  • Work practices
OSHA regulations for asbestos apply to worker exposure to asbestos fibers in the air. Some methods of compliance include:

    • Using vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters

    • Using wet methods or wetting agents during handling, mixing, removal, cutting, application, and clean-up

    • Promptly cleaning up and disposing of wastes and debris contaminated with asbestos in leak-tight containers
